About UBC Counselling Services

  • What is UBC Student Counselling?

The first point of contact for all your mental health concerns as a UBC student.

Offers a range of mental health services, including Wellness Advising initial consultations, drop-in single-session counselling, group counselling, brief therapy, and supported referrals.

Service offers a flexible, tailored, and holistic approach to mental health, allowing students to work with certified health professionals to receive support and feel empowered to take the next steps.

Counselling Services is not an emergency mental health service.  If you or someone you know is in crisis and in need of immediate help, please phone 911 or go to the nearest hospital.

  • Embedded Counsellor vs UBC Counselling Services

Various faculties and programs at UBC have an Embedded Counsellor who offer dedicated mental health and wellbeing support for the specific student populations they are embedded in.

Despite being embedded in various faculties and programs, Embedded Counsellors are part of the UBC Counselling Serves team.

The Faculty of Education has an Embedded Counsellor.

If you’d like to book an appointment with the Education Embedded Counsellor, identify yourself as an Education student and request to schedule an appointment with the Education Counsellor when phoning to make an appointment.

UBC Counselling Services also has a team of certified health professionals who can work with students from all faculties within the centre’s hours of operation.

  • What to know before your appointment

Students will be asked to fill out intake and consent forms before their first appointment. Your information is kept confidential and you may ask questions regarding sharing permissions and confidentiality of health information.

Appointments through UBC Counselling Services are provided to students at no additional cost.

For long-term counselling, students may look into coverage from their AMS health plan or look into the Counselling Clinic offered by UBC Psychological Services & Counselling Training Centre.
