SportAbility BC
SportAbility is a nonprofit, disability sport organization. We offer sport programs for British Columbians with physical disabilities including para ice hockey, Boccia, and powerchair soccer. Our programs range from recreational to high performance provincial levels.
What are three traits that you look for in a student volunteer/worker?
Student workers and volunteers will work directly and hands on with our athletes, who mostly have physical disabilities. Traits such as enthusiasm, being outgoing, taking initiative, leadership ability and ability to be adaptable are all useful and necessary. Students with coaching and/or sports backgrounds will thrive at our organization. We work with both adults and kids of all abilities so being able to adapt on the fly and think of activities that suit all needs is important. Event planning and equipment maintenance opportunities are also available.
What is a piece of advice that you would give to students attending the Kindustry career fair?
Learn by experience. Volunteer and work with a variety of different organizations to gain both hands-on experience and knowledge of the sector. There are so many paths within the rehabilitation sector and understanding how they all work together is crucial. Your network and knowledge of different programs will help significantly when working with patients, clients and/or organizations.
Please provide any links to volunteer opportunities or job opportunities that you would like to offer students and that might be of interest to them.
